Managing High-Tech Medicines in the NHS (Jan 06)
A key challenge for the NHS is the need to manage the entry of high-tech, and invariably high cost, medicines in secondary care and in cancer treatments in particular. It is becoming increasingly the case that drug costs can amount to tens of thousands of pounds to treat a single patient for a year. This poses significant ethical and financial dilemmas for commissioners who must allocate limited resources to
maximum effect. Judgments have to be made about how much money should go
into managing a specific aspect of care.
Medicines Management and the Cold Chain
At first glance, it may seem to many pharmacists that writing a supplement about the cold chain is old hat. But as our articles demonstrate there are many reasons why this subject warrants careful review by the profession. No doubt many of our pharmacy colleagues will be unimpressed to hear the words ‘NHS changes’ again, but with change there are both threats and opportunities.
