Today and Tomorrow in Hospital Pharmacy
Pharmacy Management held a seminar on the 16th October at the International Coffee Organisation (ICO), London. The audience for the seminar consisted primarily of senior hospital pharmacists and totaled about 90 persons.

- The Pharmacy White Paper will significantly advance the contribution that the profession can make to healthcare
- There is now a major focus on improving quality and safety and meeting individual patient needs
- There is a significant level of adverse drug events but an investment in pharmacy resources can make a significant impact in reducing these events
- Health Community Clinical Pharmacy Teams could have a key impact
- Research capability and capacity needs to be further developed
- Undergraduate education needs to be reformed and include workplace learning
- Medical Education England will have a key role in driving change in education and training for pharmacists
- Health Innovation and Education Clusters (HIEC) will develop local joint innovation programmes, promote learning and put evidence into practice.
- The procurement of medicines is conducted within a robust infrastructure
- Hospital pharmacy capacity needs to increase to meet demand
- There is a need to change the focus of business cases for additional resources from purely financial to include safety, quality and patient experience issues
- Investment in automation can make a significant contribution to capacity challenges in hospital pharmacy as well as improving safety
- There is a major focus on reducing healthcare associated infection rates
