Darrell Baker’s responsibilities include providing vision and strong, effective leadership for the strategic planning, co-ordination, development and delivery of an integrated medicines management and pharmacy service across the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in NHS Wales. The teaching Health Board employs 14,500 staff (approximately 275 in pharmacy) and provides primary, secondary and community care for 445,000 people across Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan and tertiary services across Wales. We promote the optimal use of medicines across all care settings, working with Clinical Boards to promote safety and quality, reduce waste and unjustified variation and maximise the cost-effectiveness of medicines (annual medicines budget circa £130m). Darrell’s 38-year professional career has been within the NHS, primarily in roles involved in direct patient care, with a strong emphasis on training and staff development. Currently Vice-Chair of the Chief Pharmacist Peer Group in Wales, he takes a lead role on workforce development.
