Detecting and preventing medication safety incidents with insulin

Insulin is a high risk drug and is frequently associated with adverse drug events.  The 2012 National Diabetes inpatient audit (NADIA) identified that medication errors occurred in one third of hospital inpatients, and one in ten patient experienced severe hypoglycaemia.  This session will explore insulin-related medication safety incidents aiming to highlight ways in which practitioners can promote the safe use of insulin in clinical practice.

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • List the causes of insulin-related adverse drug events
  • Describe methods of detecting insulin adverse drug events and potential adverse drug events in clinical pharmacy practice
  • Be aware of some of the strategies which can be used to prevent adverse drug events with insulin
