Satellite Description

Shared decision-making: an essential part of medicines optimisation or just too difficult?

‘No decision about me, without me’ is neatly sums up the idea of shared decision-making (SDM). NICE, Department of Health and NHS England, specifically Right Care, all support and encourage SDM, but uptake is patchy. In this interactive workshop participants will look at some of these drivers for SDM, the barriers and challenges to its uptake and come away equipped to think more about they can address these issues in their own practice.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to

  • Describe what is meant by shared decision-making (SDM) and explain its relationship to medicines optimisation
  • Describe current policy drivers for increased implementation of SDM
  • Reflect on their own experience of SDM
  • Evaluate common barriers to implementing SDM
  • Propose ways to address these barriers in their own practice setting
