Satellite Description

The Scottish Government National Clinical Strategy describes a need to change the way the NHS delivers services for people in Scotland.  The strategy describes the changing demographics of the population: greater life expectancy, a higher proportion of older adults, large number of patients being admitted to hospital with long-term conditions, relatively poor health of the population overall and increasing admissions to hospital, especially in people over the age of 75 years.  In parallel, there is a need to use resources more efficiently. Pharmacy services are being asked to consider how to deliver services to patients most cost effectively with the consideration of how services can be extended across 7 days. In addition, there is an increasing expectation for pharmacy to contribute to medicines saving initiatives.

The Lord Carter of Coles review for NHS England looked at unwanted variation in NHS hospitals and made a number of recommendations for how NHS hospitals could improve productivity and create efficiencies.   The NHS Scotland National Acute Pharmacy Services Group have reviewed this document and developed a work programme based on the applicable recommendations within this report.  This workshop is an opportunity to hear more about this work; and to work with peers to consider new ideas for working more efficiently within the hospital pharmacy service.
