Development of a pharmacy workforce to meet the needs of primary care

In 2014 there were in the region of 70 million extra GP consultations in England compared with 4 years previously.  Much of this reflects an increasing population in age and therefore healthcare need. The RCGP has stated that they are 16,000 GPs short to meet the current demand in general practice and similar workforce challenges are seen in primary care nursing. In response to this Government initiatives have supported the development of a new clinical pharmacy workforce in general practice. A recent evaluation of pharmacists working in general practice in England showed:-

  • 70% of pharmacists reported clinical medication reviews being a major part of their role
  • 63% of pharmacists reported doing discharge reviews every day
  • 75% of pharmacists surveyed report responding to colleague queries every day
  • 89% of survey respondents report working autonomously

Moving forward the BMA now want a pharmacist in every single GP practice in England and there is renewed focus on the pharmacy team including optimising the role of the pharmacy technician.
