Person Centred Consultation Skills

Communicating with patients in a person-centred consultation can be one of the most challenging tasks that we as pharmacists undertake. But what is this evidence base for what is the best way to achieve this? This presentation will draw upon communication and consultation research to include previous work with pharmacist prescribers using recorded consultations and qualitative data. The presentation will explore challenges in having consultations with patients about prescribing, sharing decisions about medication with patients and addressing patients’ ideas, concerns and expectations. It will consider how even small changes in how we word things can impact upon patient behaviours. It will conclude with a series of suggestions or tips on how we might improve our communication skills with patients.
