Blood glucose monitoring is an essential part of a diabetics’ treatment regime, but is it really necessary for everyone? With the government and the NHS trying to save money, and diabetes costing the NHS billions every year it is essential that we look at the right monitors for the right person. With such a vast array of meters on the market, where do we start to select the most appropriate meter for an individual, and what can these different meters offer. I will try to give an over view of their benefits, and the likely costing of these different meters. We will also look at the DVLA regulations and how this has changed recently. With technology developing rapidly, there is now the ability to monitor your glucose levels continually, demonstrating patterns, and problematic areas/times, so users can have a better understanding of their glucose control, and from this the newer Flash glucose monitoring system, which also identifies the direction that the glucose excursion is going. I will look at the current issues surrounding the funding of these devices, and concerns patients and clinicians have with their use. |
