I am a Consultant Anaesthetist in the NHS, with a degree in Pharmacology, and am a member of one of our hospital pharmacy committees. I have been using a Dexcom CGM since I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes six years ago and have carried on working normally, using the CGM to optimise insulin therapy and to act as low BG alarm. My HbA1cs have all been around 40 since diagnosis, with no hypos. Patient empowerment with knowledge and understanding are key to improving outcomes and reducing complications in diabetes. Pharmacists have a unique role to play in this and with the optimisation of medicines. This is too often underutilised. This session will offer a personal insight into simple and straightforward ways that you can help Type 1 patients to understand and manage the altered physiology in Type 1 DM in practical terms. CGMs are now becoming available on the NHS. The instant feedback is a remarkable learning tool for learning to manage basal and bolus inulin doses, and the effects of exercise and the natural Circadian rhythm on insulin sensitivity. |
