This session will give pharmacists a taster of a new skill-set that enables patients to identify what is paramount to them, and unlocking their own internal motivation.
Health Coaching is the conversation we have with patients, exploring their understanding of their disease and educating them to establish their goals. Motivational Interviewing (MI) uses a guiding style to engage patients, clarifying their strengths and aspirations, evoking their own motivations for change and promoting autonomy in decision making.
These interventions enable patients to change the behaviors that are preventing them from making healthier choices and empowering them to become active participants in their care, enabling them to reach their personal health goals not our goals and targets.
For our NHS to continue, patients with LTCs need to take ownership of their own health, wellbeing and care. This is true Patient Centred Healthcare.
Health Coaching and MI combined are a key skill, approach and mind-set that can be used effectively to enable shared decision making as part of a collaborative conversation.
