Today with the advent of social media the dietary landscape is a confusing place. Much pseudoscience exists and often it is difficult for dietitian’s to keep one consistent message. All healthcare professionals at some time in their career will be asked about diet and lifestyle. Though remaining within your professional boundaries is important, without sufficient knowledge, patients can become more confused and even turn to more extreme methods on nutritional management. So why is there so much confusion with diet? This seminar will cover the journey of our dietary behaviour from past to present. It will explain potential causes of the obesity epidemic we face and highlight the difficulties with studying nutritional science. It will evaluate the evidence base for the best dietary strategies for good health and explain the optimal strategies for diet, fitness and exercise. By the end of this session you should have a working knowledge of how to advise patients on a healthy diet and lifestyle choices. Mark Green is a registered dietitian specialising in diabetes care. For 2 years he has worked as the diabetes specialist dietitian at the University Hospital of Southampton working between inpatient and community services. Prior to his role in diabetes, Mark worked as a bariatric specialist dietitian and also specialised in weight management. Mark holds a sport and exercise science degree from the University of Brighton, which he completed prior to embarking upon a career in dietetics. This led to various roles working as a personal trainer both throughout his studies and in his own business. Mark puts his experience to good use. Besides his NHS commitments, he runs a private practice. Here he advises on weight, diabetes and sports nutrition. He has a passion for sharing evidence based nutritional approaches and thinks diet and lifestyle always has a place in disease management and prevention. Foundation Level. |
