Satellite Developing a Patient Information Video for Direct Oral Anticoagulants
Speakers Lynne Davidson, Clinical Pharmacist – Cardiology, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary
Satellite Description

This workshop will illustrate the concept and development of a patient education video for direct oral anticoagulants, which could be used across all sectors of healthcare and accessed independently by patients, and share how the NHS Grampian experience could be utilised to prepare similar materials for other high risk medications.

Patient education is a key part of ensuring the safety and efficacy of these high risk medicines, as identified as part of the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP), and ensuring the safe use of medicines is a key priority of the Achieving Excellence in Pharmaceutical Care Strategy.

It will give an opportunity to view the video, discussion of the process, challenges and achievements involved in development, how feedback has been collated so far, and the next steps in the process to launch.

Development so far has included achieving the following:

  • Collaboration and strengthened links between the local University and hospital pharmacy department
  • Encouragement of joint working with involvement and collaboration between different healthcare professionals, pharmacy sectors and academia, to create a usable tool for all environments
  • Demonstrating how pharmacy can take the lead and initiative to improve the quality, safety and consistency of patient education
